Event description
A fascinating evening about the history of the Great North Wood and its significance to Dulwich and South East London

About this event

It is hard to imagine that the busy townscape of South London was once a great wood, stretching almost seven miles from Croydon to Deptford. Not all has been lost though - scattered through the suburbs, from Dulwich to Norwood, a number of oak woodlands have survived since before the Norman Conquest. Its legacy can be also found in the names of places around us: Norwood, Collier ’s Wood, Honor Oak, Penge, meaning ‘Wood’s End’, Woodside, and Selhurst, from the Anglo-Saxon for ‘dwelling in a wood.’

Drawing on a wealth of documents, historic maps and environmental evidence, The Wood That Built London charts the fortunes of the North Wood from its earliest times to the gradual encroachment of the metropolis. C.J. Schüler explores the stories of the people who lived here and made use of the Wood, from the Ice Age to modern Britain, including the poets and writers who found inspiration among its trees. Finally, it covers the importance of its ecology to the present climate crisis, the current threats facing the remaining woodland, and the continued efforts to save it.

Join C. J. Schüler for a fascinating evening about the past, present and future of The Great North Wood.
