Intro
This walk for Go parks London is led by Walking Post and encompasses some of the remaining sections of the Great North Wood, an ancient natural oak woodland whose boundaries originally stretched from Croydon to Deptford.
Many fragments of woodland remain and this route attempts to string most of them together for a peaceful, leafy walk through suburban London, taking in lovely vistas, parks and quiet streets along the way. See walk details.
About Go Parks London
Many green spaces in the UK have community groups, often called ‘friends groups’, who work together to support and enhance the site. For some groups, this consists of things like litter picking or small planting projects, and other groups take on large projects like community events, tree planting, running a café, forest schools, and more. People who volunteer find it rewarding to learn new skills and meet their neighbours, and it’s great for health and wellbeing, too. GoParksLondon is a project at CPRE London to support these volunteer groups to learn the skills to do their work and get help from a network of around 600 friends groups in London. On this walk, we’ll hear from a few of these groups, so you can learn about the interesting work they do in their green space and ask questions about their projects!
About Walking Post
The Walking Post is a not-for-profit website creating and promoting walking routes around London and the South East which are accessible by public transport. It’s run by Lucy and Emily, two friends based in South London who walk with a group of fellow hikers most weekends and also offer ‘open’ walks once a month, which anyone can join.
