Description

A Thousand Cranes presents

The Great Race!

Running Time: 20 minutes

Recommended for adults and children aged 4 - 7 years

2020 will see the Japanese Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo. Using a form of Japanese storytelling called kamishibai, the performance is inspired by the traditional story of The Great Race! which tells how the eastern Zodiac calendar was created.

Legend has it that the Jade Emperor asked twelve creatures to race to decide which years they will look after, depending on the order in which they finish. The story presents all sorts of problems for the creatures taking part, who range from a dragon to a rat. They each travel in different ways depending on their physicality and nature. The children watching will discover their birth creature and see where their creature is placed and why.

The story tells how not only speed, but also kindness and courage help you cross the finishing line, sharing with children the importance of taking part, not simply winning.

To encourage everyone to try Family Theatre @ Yate Library, we are asking you to pay what you want for these performances. Simply watch the show and, at the end, put a donation in the bucket. Pay whatever you think the experience deserves.
