Event description

Description

In 2006, with her children having flown the nest and retirement age approaching, Megan Lewis decides that it’s time to fulfil her lifelong dream. Inspired by the Olympic Games, she determines to travel from China to London on horseback.

After undertaking months of research, in October 2008 she finally sets out on the first leg of this remarkable voyage, tackling the Ming Great Wall of China.

She starts her journey riding beneath the East Gate, the symbolic arched gateway that reads ‘Di Yi Guan Xia Tian’ (‘First Pass Under Heaven’); some 3000km later and she would become the first person on record to ride the Great Wall from end to end.

Join us at Stanfords as Megan gives an entertaining and honest account that sees her battling the challenges of Chinese bureaucracy, wild terrain, urban madness, lame horses and a punctured lung.

In the Shadow of the Great Wall chronicles Megan’s practical, geographical and cultural experiences alongside her various companions, both human and equine.

Tickets £4 (redeemable against the price of In the Shadow of the Great Wall by Megan Knoyle Lewis ).

Includes a glass of wine/soft drink.
