Further information about the Rows of Great Yarmouth

These distinct narrow lanes which run from east to west throughout the town of Great Yarmouth, provided access routes from the Denes to the River Yare dating back to mediaeval times.

There were many rows built within the confines of the Great Yarmouth Town Wall but it was not until 1804, when they were officially numbered from north to south that the total was recorded as 145. Prior to this the rows were referred to by a unique name which reflected on a person of significance to the row, town or business such as a Tavern.

The Rows are an important part of the social history of Great Yarmouth as they housed the people of the town and with that there are many stories to come from them. They have been the focus of notable writers such as Dickens and Defoe but have also been the inspiration for other creative works through photography and art.

The rows and the people who lived there, had many hard times through tragedies in fire, illnesses and disasters until the subsequent damage during the first and second world wars along with their already steady deterioration made way for clearance to then re-plan and re-develop some parts of the town. This tour will highlight some of the people who were part of their history.
