Event description
Guardian columnist Marina Hyde and parliamentary sketch writer John Crace will talk about the art of political humour.

About this event

John Crace has been the Guardian’s parliamentary sketch writer for seven years, giving him a ringside seat in Westminster as the Brexit psychodrama played out; he is the proud creator of the term “The Maybot”. Marina Hyde has written for the Guardian about celebrity, sport and current affairs, and in her hugely popular political column, she takes a sideways, satirical look at the biggest news stories of the week.

Parliamentary sketch writing and humour have a long tradition in British media. But how do you tackle a tumultuous news cycle that involves Brexit, the presidency of Donald Trump, and a global pandemic? These two much-loved writers will explore why, even when everything feels like “absurdist theatre”, we still need jokes, how they use parody and humour to poke fun at our political class, and why satire is one of the most powerful tools we have.

From Brexit pandemonium to disgraced royalty, from Trump tantrums to a Prime Minister in a fridge, join them as they reflect on the extraordinary last few years with Today in Focus presenter Anushka Asthana.

We are celebrating The Guardian’s 200th birthday with a digital festival featuring today’s leading thinkers, activists, artists and politicians. Join our specially curated programme of online conversations from wherever you are in the world. See the full lineup here and sign up to our newsletter for more announcements.

All tickets include the opportunity to watch the event on demand at a later time. A link to the recording will be sent to all ticket holders 24 hours after the event.
