The gunpowder plot and individual terror
Overview
Join us for our next Thursday afternoon meeting, on a festive theme!
In 1605 conspirators including Robert Catesby and Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament and kill the King of England and Scotland, in response to fading hopes of increased religious tolerance for Catholics and as part of a broader plan to prompt a popular revolt against the crown.
It failed, but its legacy is still around today. The Guy Fawkes from V for Vendetta graphic novel and film became a symbol of broad and amorphous resistance through movements such as Occupy and Anonymous.
Obviously the demand of the original plotters to restore a Catholic monarchy has nothing to do with socialism, but neither do methods of conspiracy or plotting. Come find out why socialists argue against isolated conspiracies, but put forward the involvement of working class struggle and mass organisation.
We will be meeting at 3:30pm in Birkbeck Central.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
