About the music

Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, composed in 1785, is a pioneering work in the chamber music repertoire. One of the first pieces ever written for this combination of piano and strings, it is striking for its dramatic power and emotional depth. From Mozart’s bold opening movement to the lyrical Andante and the spirited, dance-like finale, the work blends operatic flair with intricate interplay between the instruments. It is a compelling early example of Mozart pushing the boundaries of form and expression in chamber music.

Fauré’s Piano Quartet No.1 in C minor, which was completed in 1879, is one of his most beloved chamber works, brimming with passion and refinement. Written during a turbulent period in the composer’s personal life, the quartet moves with emotional fluidity with Fauré’s signature harmonic language and melodic elegance shining throughout. Balancing Romantic warmth with classical poise, the work reveals the young composer’s distinctive voice and his deep sensitivity to instrumental colour and texture.
