The Hackney Peace Carnival Mural, Dalston's iconic public art display is celebrating its 40th anniversary!

This panel discussion with Dr Ben Wiedel-Kaufmann, Laurie Elks, CND Vice President Kate Hudson and Muralist Paul Butler will explore the history of the our iconic mural, to help you decode its social values and peace campaigns of the 1980s that were driven by the threat of nuclear war and a sense of community unity.

Designed in 1984 by the mural artist Ray Walker, the Hackney Peace Carnival mural was painted, after his untimely death at just 39, by friend and artist Mick Jones and Ray’s wife Anna, and completed in1985.

This mural is recognised today as one of the five iconic London murals, and is one of only two remaining from the six Peace Murals commissioned by the Greater London Council in 1983.

Discover more about how the mural came about and some of the people in the mural by exploring the exhibition based on the Ray Walker's preportory work in designing the mural, including his unqiue photographs of the Hackney Peace Carinval, 1983 - on display at Hackney Archives.

Doors to Hackney Archives will open at 3pm, panel discussion to start at 3.30pm
