Event description

20th European Speechwriter Network Conference

Rhetoric is the art of influence, friendship, and eloquence, of ready wit and irrefutable logic.

– Jay Heinrichs

In the context of turbulent political events, the 19th UK Speechwriters’ Guild/European Speechwriter Network Leadership & Communication conference will be held at the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris.

Our conferences are open to people who write speeches in their organisations.

We welcome advanced speechwriters, beginners and those interested in developing skills for the future.

You’ll meet colleagues who face the same challenges.

The European Speechwriter Network, working with the UK Speechwriters’ Guild, has pioneered a format where we listen to top speechwriters, leaders and interpreters talk about their work.

We learn what techniques they use, how they craft stories and how they build relationships.

We host our conferences in a university environment, enabling speechwriters to exchange ideas, make contacts and build a reputation.

Who should attend?

Previous conferences in Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin have attracted speechwriters from four Prime Ministers’ offices, the European Commission, NATO, Airbus, BMW, IBM, the CBI, Orange, Deloitte, the United Nations, the European Investment Bank, Coca Cola as well as the Dutch, Danish and British civil service.

This conference is for anyone wanting to improve their ability to write and deliver speeches.

While the conference is predominantly in English, the techniques will be transferable to other languages.

It’s also for people wishing to improve their company’s ability to communicate ideas.

The benefits

  • Acquire techniques used in the White House, European institutions and and in numerous government and multinational offices around Europe

  • Get insights into rhetoric from top writers

  • Listen to outstanding public speakers

  • New contacts, ideas and perspectives on the trade

We've got a fantastic line-up of speakers for the Friday:

Aziliz Gouez
is remarkable because she was born French, but she became the speechwriter to the Irish President, Michael D Higgins. She'll be explaining the challenges of writing for a head of state in your non-native language.

Antonia Fleischmann
is a speechwriter at the Bundesbank. She will be giving some insights into why central bankers make speeches.

Tom Moylan
is the speechwriter to the European Commissioner on Trade. He'll be sharing some of his writing strategies and offering a flavour of the Celtic myth.

Kevin Toolis
will be speaking about the 'catastrophe speech', with reference in particular to Tony Blair's speech announcing the death of Princess Diana.

Hélène Faure
was the speechwriter to former French PM, Manuel Valls, who has just completed the screenwriting course at UCLA. She's sure to allude to that.

Alexandra Fresse-Eliazord
, a former speechwriter and actress, will be running a session on how you can use improv to stimulate your creativity.

There are several other outstanding invitations to speakers for which we're waiting a response.
