The Happisburgh Coastline
Event Information
Description
The GSN's first field trip of the year takes us to the famous Happisburgh coastline. Martin Warren has kindly offered to lead this particular trip and regular participants in his geology walks will know how knowledgeable he is and how fascinating his insights into Norfolk geology are.
The objective of the day will be to walk the 2.8 km beach section northwards to Ostend. We will view the Happisburgh Till in its type section to look at its composition and consider the origin of the topography developed on its top surface and the sorted sediments resting on it. There is also Walcott Till and the Arctic Freshwater Bed at Ostend. If beach conditions allow we may see the upper parts of the Cromer Forest-bed/Wroxham Crag beneath the till including the ‘Hill House Formation’ (or should that be ‘member’?) from which the exciting archaeology has come. We shall return along the 2.8 km of beach and can admire some gorgeous blocks of volcaniclastic rocks (Bardon Hill Quarry, Leicestershire) amongst the rock armour.
We will set off from the Beach Road (pay and display) car park in Happisburgh at 13:30. Alternatively, for those of you who would like a refreshing drink before we start, we will be enjoying a pint in the Hill House Inn at 12:30.
Please ensure you bring appropriate footwear for the walk and waterproofs in case of rain. Please also ensure you have a supply of drinking water and sun hat/cream in case the weather is particularly hot.
