The Healing Word - Poetry and Connection
Event Information
About this event
Poets and writing-for-wellbeing practitioners will share their thoughts and work on such themes as: Poems as Friends, Loss and Poetry, Poetry and Later Life, Poetry and Prison, Poetry and Activism and Poetry and Pilgrimage. The programme, as it evolves, will be updated on www.thepoetrypractice.co.uk
Delegates will attend all sessions (no break-out groups) and there will be facilitated discussions and writing exercises throughout the day. We will explore how poetry enables personal healing and can build community and offer hope.
There will be refreshments, a buffet lunch, book stall, networking opportunities and a chance to enjoy Canterbury in the summer. We hope the day will be joyful and celebratory, whilst acknowledging the sorrows of the world.
The Poetry Practice Ltd is offering the day on a not-for-profit basis and any surplus income after paying for the venue, catering and marketing will be donated to charitable causes.
The venue is within the Cathedral precincts, part of a stunning World Heritage Site. There are beautiful outside spaces, and for those who wish, there will be a chance to attend Evensong at the end of the conference.
Accommodation should be booked in good time. There is a full range of options from campsites and hostels as well as b&bs and hotels.
Hampton by Hilton is in the historic centre, five minutes from the Cathedral Lodge, and is offering 15% off its usual room rate for the nights of 28th and 29th June: Go to Hampton.com , enter Canterbury, your dates, number of guests, and in the Special Rates box, the Group Code THW. (tel 44-1227 936505 with queries).
There are excellent train and bus connections to Canterbury. The venue is a 12 minute (0.6 miles) walk from Canterbury West Station and 9 minutes (0.5 miles) from Canterbury East, 5 minutes from the Bus Station.
Some delegates are funded by their employers. Certificates of Attendance can be issued for Continuing Professional Development and the hours may count towards training in Poetry Therapy.
