Dirty Market are taking over The Old Library with a radical theatre adaptation of Surrealist Leonora Carrington’s novel The Hearing Trumpet.

92-year old Marian is deaf and lost in her memories. Dumped in a sinister care home, Marian finds herself amongst a band of rebellious elderly inmates. Together they take on the despotic rulers of the retirement home, survive the apocalypse and pit themselves against the patriarchal evils of the world.

With live music and animation, ancient monsters and psychoanalysts, join Dirty Market on a weird and wonderful journey through The Old Library for a joyful celebration of outcasts and rebels.

Opening on Carrington's centenary, 6 April 2017, Dirty Market’s The Hearing Trumpet is the UK’s first major theatre adaptation of Carrington's work. An iconic surrealist and visionary, Carrington (1917-2011) is best known for her detailed paintings inspired by myth, female sexuality, and autobiography.

Dirty Market are a theatre company who make innovative performances out of stuff that's normally thrown away. Known for their distinctive DIY aesthetic and unique bricolage creative approach, Dirty Market often make work in non-theatre buildings and in communities where theatre doesn't normally take place. The imaginative ensemble behind Bacchaefull (Time Out Critic's choice), Something About You..., Be Good Revolutionaries and Oxbow Lakes, Dirty Market’s productions transform spaces and take audiences on surprising, visceral journeys.
