Description

The (He)art of Assisting

Are you an experienced Yoga teacher or a newly qualified teacher? Do you struggle with the internal questions, do I touch or not, do I feel comfortable, am I qualified, do I know what I’m doing? All these questions and struggles we face as teachers are just that…our own perceived struggles. Who is having the experience of an assist, we as the teachers or our students…or perhaps could it be both? There's much to explore here!!

In this intensive Assisting training we will explore in-depth the subtle and sometimes not so subtle impact of “adjusting” or “assisting” our students in a 1:1 or group environment. We’ll delve deep into our own ideas of the pursuit of a “perfect Asana” and what that looks and feels like. We’ll learn to take such important considerations as trauma and anatomy or “skeletal variation” into account and the emotional and energetic as well as physical and physiological anatomy of an Asana.

You will deepen both your own practice and also how you guide the practice of others. At times you might even grapple with what you’ve already learned and perhaps what beliefs you hold. This will be an explorative and investigative training where we’ll really challenge the depths of our thinking. It's easier to learn terms and intellectualize concepts but having a truly experiential journey is quiet something else. We'll keep things simple, you won't need to bring your strong anatomy and Sanskrit knowledge here, what you will need to bring is an open heart and a curious mind. A sense of humour is also hightly recommended and a willingness to try, think and feel.

This will be a predominantly full hands-on workshop where we will work with each other for extended periods of time getting comfortable with exploring and connecting to human bodies and our notions and relationship to the term “adjusting” someone. In addition to a full hands-on approach, we'll also explore the role of language and visual and verbal cueing.

This training will run over 2 days one week apart to give us the opportunity to practice what we’ve learned in real class settings and then come back to further discuss and unpack the process even further.

You are free to join either session, however, to fully benefit the training it is suggested you do join both days.

All course hours qualify for YA US continuing ed contact hours.

Clara’s practice began in 2001 during an emotionally trying time and has since guided her through the ups and downs of life and coping with bouts of depression and anxiety. Clara’s heartfelt objective as a teacher, and if you’ve ever experienced her teaching style know this, is to keep it simple and dig deep. She is a Vipassana meditator and has been studying the Dharma since the age of 17. Clara’s teaching style is simple and prompts inquisitiveness and she is known to challenge dogma and orthodox ways. Her goal is to get people feeling and thinking, questioning and discovering…essentially get them experiencing capital “Y” Yoga.
