About this event

Film & Media • Film

Join us at BLOC cinema for a rare and exciting event featuring the acclaimed Chinese film The Hedgehog (2024), directed by Gu Changwei 顾长卫 — one of China’s most celebrated filmmakers.

Following the screening, there will be an in‑person discussion with the director, joined by leading film scholars in London, as we explore the film’s powerful themes of trauma, mental health, and urban life. We have invited Dr Kiki Tianqi Yu, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at QMUL, a famous filmmaker whose works include China’s Van Goghs (2016), Memory of Home (2009), The Two Lives of Li Ermao (2019). We have also invited Professor Janet Harbord, Professor of Film Studies at QMUL, whose recent research includes “Autism through Cinema” , work on film archaeology, gesture, and disability studies in the moving image.

Whether you’re a film enthusiast, a student or scholar of Chinese cinema, or simply curious, this is a unique opportunity to engage with a visionary director and dive into the world of contemporary Chinese filmmaking.
