Event description

Description

Manchester Cathedral has what is thought to be the largest complete series of parish registers (of baptisms, marriages and burials), for a single parish, in the country. There are over 450 leather and vellum bound volumes, covering the period from 1573 to the present day.

After the huge popularity of last year’s event, we will be opening up the archives to the public and giving you a chance to delve into the records and become a heritage detective for the day.

What is the link between one of the wardens of this church and Darwin and his theory of evolution? Which one of the Pre-Raphaelite artists got married in this church and why? What was the busiest day ever for marriages in the church in the 19th century? Do you have a centuries old family connection with the church and would like to find out more?

No previous experience or knowledge of archives needed, just come along and join the club.

Manchester Cathedral is proud t be part of Heritage Open Days.
