Event description

Description

When work started on Plymouth Breakwater in 1811 it was known as “The Great National Undertaking.” Its near completion 30 years later gave protection to naval and merchant shipping and ensured Plymouth’s position as a major port and naval base.

Nigel Overton, Curator (City & Maritime Heritage), Plymouth City Museum & Art Gallery will describe how the dream of the world’s first free-standing breakwater became a reality. He will also talk about some of its famous visitors and how it continues to protect the Sound in spite of all that the weather has thrown at it.

You will have a chance to contribute to the Wembury MCA Advisory Group which helps fund the educational resources of the Wembury Marine Centre. A £2 donation is suggested.
