Event description

Description

The Birmingham & Midland Institute has been at the heart of Birmingham’s cultural life for over 150 years, originally founded by Act of Parliament in 1854 for the ‘Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art amongst all Classes of Persons resident in Birmingham and Midland Counties’. Charles Dickens was one of its early Presidents.

Come and learn about the Institute's illustrious history and discover its extensive Grade II* listed building and the original Birmingham Library with a talk and guided tour with Dr Connie Wan.

Our building will be open all day when you can join us for other activities too:

- FREE family tree workshop with the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry
- Explore the Society of the History of Astronomy’s unique library and collection
- Vintage book and bake sale to raise funds for our Library
