About this event

The History of the Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria) Mushroom

With Dr Andy Letcher at Root Project

An Exmoor Dark Skies Festival Special

It’s a mushroom that’s sparked wonder, fear, and fascination for centuries and there’s a lot more to it than Christmas cards and warning signs. Step into the curious world of red caps and white spots where myth, magic, and mushrooms meet.

Join us at Root Project for an evening with Exeter university senior lecturer, writer and folklorist, Dr Andy Letcher, as part of Exmoor’s Dark Skies Festival. From ancient shamanic rites to Victorian fairy tales, Siberian folklore to modern psychedelic theory, Andy traces the long, strange story of the fly agaric mushroom.

We’ll gather indoors at Oare House, where you’ll be welcomed with a drink and some seasonal nibbles before we delve into the strange and symbolic life of one of the world’s most recognisable and misunderstood fungi.

Whether you’re a naturalist, a fungi-lover, or just mushroom-curious, come along for an evening of stories, science, and the occasional surprise.
