About this event

Working-class voices make up just 16% of the UK’s Creative Industries – the lowest representation in decades. At a time when authentic stories risk being pushed to the margins, how do we make sure they are heard, seen, and celebrated?

Join us for this inspiring Curious Creatives Network session with Jayne Williams, freelance theatre maker, writer, producer and Participation Director at New Perspectives Theatre Company. With over 25 years’ experience creating theatre that speaks to real communities, Jayne has dedicated her career to amplifying underrepresented voices.

Recently, Jayne has been co-writing sixTeen with Dr Lisa Mckenzie – a powerful new play about three girls coming of age during the 1984/85 miners’ strike. With a 100% working-class creative team, the project is proof that representation matters, both on and off stage.

What to expect:

  • A candid conversation about the challenges and opportunities of telling working-class stories today.
  • Insights into Jayne’s journey as a writer, producer and Participation Director.
  • A spotlight on sixTeen and how theatre can be a space for unheard voices.
  • Space to share your own thoughts, experiences, and ideas on keeping these stories alive.

Whether you’re a theatre-maker, educator, student, or simply passionate about representation in the arts, this session will spark important conversations about access, authenticity, and the future of cultural storytelling.

What is The Hour: Spotlight?

Stories, journeys, and lessons from inspiring voices in cultural education.

The Hour: Spotlight invites a guest speaker each month to share their creative journey: the turning points, the challenges, the lessons learned. Expect honest, thought-provoking insights rather than polished keynotes, followed by space for Q&A and discussion.

When?

Every last Thursday of the month, 12–1pm (online via Zoom)

Why join?

  • Hear from diverse voices across the arts, education, and cultural sectors.
  • Gain fresh ideas and inspiration for your own practice.
