Description

A Phenomenological Approach to Art Psychotherapy: Minding the Gap

How do we know what is being communicated through image making? This talk will explore from a phenomenological perspective the degrees of knowing revealed through exploring clinical examples and artworks. Further to this the process by which we engage with emergent content will be investigated specially in relation to the role of reflexivity as a function that integrates conscious thought and speech through the us of metaphor. The talk will aim to bring together philosophical, neurological and experiental perspectives together. The emphasis will be on how we interpret experience and how we verify our hypothesis, with increasing degrees of differentiation. Special attention will be given to Derrida's concept of 'the gap' and how this relates to a phenomenological approach.
