Defining Our Identity as Arts Therapists – Can We Have a Shared Language?

From a comprehensive review of literature for arts therapies treatment of personality disorders, this talk will focus on the question of whether there are overarching concepts relating to arts therapies practice and perceived effects. From recent systematic reviews and meta synthesis of over 25 qualitative studies this talk will look at what the major themes are in relation to arts therapies practice, how much the arts are referred to in terms of perceived change and what therapeutic competencies are employed. From the findings there is a strong indication that there are shared therapeutic actions and perceived benefits across the arts therapies. Clinical examples will be used to illustrate the therapeutic actions from different modalities.
