Description

‘Observing the other, observing the self’

“As a mind is observed encountering another mind, it is possible to identify both seeds of those factors which may nurture, and also of those which may obstruct, potential mental and emotional development” (Waddell, 2004)

This lecture will explore the importance within arts psychotherapies practice the development of a robust observational stance of “clients’ patterns of being’ - the way they relate to us and the art medium within sessions. The therapist’s observational stance will be linked to the infant observational method developed by Esther Bick (1964), a method which has contributed to formulating an understanding of dismantled, unintegrated, disintegrated and thought-disorder states in early development (Waddell, 2004). As it has been noted by Bick, the development of these observant skills requires self-reflective awareness of the impact of the observer on the observed, thus enabling clinicians to not only become better observers of others, but also better observers of ourselves in response to others.
