An incredible evening with gumbo of styles from jazz to R&B, hip hop to funk, beats to gospel and more. Fun Tuesday for everyone!

About this event

Back in 2010 leader of top UK band The Ikos Dom Pipkin founded the “Music Shop” along with Jazz FM’s DJ Lil’ Koko. Both Pipkin and Koko are true specialists in the world of New Orleans music, and wanted to create a space where musicians could meet and jam around this wonderful genre, encouraging established players and the less experienced to work and grow together.

The Music Shop now comes to the Temple of Art and Music, found within the magical food and drink world of Mercato Metropolitano. Jammers on all instruments are encouraged to join in this incredible gumbo of styles. New Orleans has one of the richest musical traditions found anywhere on this planet. Jazz was born there in the early 20th century, and the city was a driving force in the new RnB sound of the late 40s and early 50s which led to the birth of rock and roll. The New Orleans artist Fats Domino was the second biggest selling rock and roll artist beaten only by the king Elvis Presley. If you add to this the street sounds of brass bands – always evolving from “second line” styles through to hip hop, tribal Mardi Gras Indian beats, and some of the world’s greatest funk and soul, New Orleans and its unique offbeat style provides one of the richest seams of musical material to jam with.

Dom Pipkin has a stellar CV as both a performer and educator, with performances globally and many radio appearances, and is passionate about spreading the New Orleans musical gospel. The evening begins with a set from the house trio - and then we open up the floor to jammers – the material will be New Orleans based. Check out our playlists and study the kind of material we do. We encourage players to “use their ears” more than chord charts, as the New Orleans sound is all about this interactive tradition, learn and play from those around you! Of course the night is more than just a jam. Come to experience the music, laugh, dance, have a drink. Get your Bourbon Street blues on every third Tuesday of the month at TAM!
