Event description

Description

The Illuminated River Foundation presents a talk by artist Leo Villareal on his concept for this major new project for London.

The project is supported by the Mayor for London.

The Illuminated River is a commission to create a major public artwork to illuminate up to 15 of central London’s bridges. Once complete, it will be the longest public art commission in the world at 2.5 miles in length, from Albert Bridge to Tower Bridge. In total these bridges are used by over 179 million people per year. The first phase of the project is due to launch in 2019.

Following an international competition, the winning team was American light artist Leo Villareal and London architects Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands. They proposed a dynamic kinetic artwork which respects the natural environment, local inhabitants, architectural character and history of the bridges, creating a sensitive and site-specific interplay with the river.

Comprehensive ecological assessments and luminance surveys were undertaken and the artwork will replace outdated, high-energy consumption lighting on the bridges with LED lighting which is much more energy-efficient and less costly to maintain. By removing existing excessive fittings and using more subtle LEDs, the project will enhance the architectural beauty of the bridges and provide a better environment for wildlife.

Apart from an initial investment and start-up of £250,000 from the Olympic Reserve towards the costs of the initial competition, the project is funded through philanthropic sources and the Illuminated River Foundation will continue to seek the balance from private sources rather than the public purse. All public funding received to date by the Foundation will be offset by a legacy of resources for the Greater London Authority, London Boroughs, and the emergency services to use in their work.

The artwork will be free and publicly accessible to all - Londoners and visitors alike – and will help create more opportunities for people to enjoy and explore the Thames and the bridges that span it.
