Event description

Description

Domestic abuse comes in many different forms. It can include a range of harmful behaviours, including emotional, psychological, physical, sexual and financial abuse as well as physical violence.

Children don’t have to see an abusive incident taking place for it to have an impact. They may overhear it from another room or notice injuries from the abuse after it has happened. However, they experience it, domestic abuse between family members or caregivers has a huge impact on the children who witness it that can affect their behaviour, relationships and experiences later in life. As with their caregivers, the risk doesn't stop for children once the relationship is over and, can be greatly used by the perpetrator as a means for further control and abuse.

This course not only looks at the impact that domestic abuse may have on a child but also at the trauma it causes while addressing techniques to help build resiliency. Links to Adolescent to Parent Abuse, The Cycle of Abuse and risk of Adolescent Abusive Relationships are also examined and tackled. The day will also look into the conflict within child protection policies, specifically around parenting capacity and child contact.
