Description

Normalising impact in a ‘challenge led’ funding landscape (Prof Georgina Endfield, APVC R&I HSS):

The impact agenda is far from new but impact continues to be conceptualised as an additional component to a research proposal rather than an embedded aspect of the research itself. This session will consider the shifting nature of the funding landscape and the increasing emphasis being placed in challenge-led and impact driven research. This session will focus on the need to ‘normalise’ impact in this new funding context.

The session will also consider the emergence of the ‘new model researcher’, i.e. those whose research roles are directly linked to engagement with non HEI partners and the impact agenda.

The impact road leads to success (Prof Malcolm Jackson, APVC R&I HLS):

  • Why is non-academic impact important to the University?
  • How can achieving impact enhance your career?
  • What support is available to progress research to impact outside of academia?

Professor Malcolm Jackson (HLS APVC for Research and Impact) will introduce this session aimed at answering these questions.

Rob Ashworth (HLS Impact & Research Officer) will briefly describe the external context that is driving the need to demonstrate impact and the support available to facilitate this.

Exemplar cases from academics will show how their research has been progressed through to achieving impact in the world outside of academia.

This session is aimed at post-docs, early career researchers and academics who want to know more about the relevance of impact to the University and how this may affect them.

Science and Engineering in the wider community (Prof Ric Williams, APVC R&I, S&E):

Have you ever wondered what happens when you step outside of the lab?

Professor Ric Williams (S&E APVC for Research and Impact) will introduce a session on projects and training initiated by post-docs and ECRs beyond their everyday research that have led to engagement with the wider University community and beyond.

We will discuss the benefits, the pitfalls, and the opportunities to get involved yourself.

Refreshments will be provided

Please note the refreshments for this session will be served in a different room to the one in which the session will be held. Refreshments will be in the South Atrium in the Foresight Centre, and will be served half an hour before the session from 9:30 to 10:00.
