About this event
Current events and the war in Ukraine have focused attention on the Russian government and Vladimir Putin. However, little attention is paid to recent Russian history. How did the collapse of the Soviet Union, the loss of international status, and the massive changes in people's lives over the last decades affect Russian politics?
Addressing some of these broader issues in Russia, this Zoom meeting hosted by Cheltenham Morning Star Readers & Supporters Group on Monday 30 May, 7pm, has Dr Edmund Griffiths talking on the imperial idea, modern Russia and the war in Ukraine.
Dr Edmund Griffiths teaches Russian at Oxford has researched popular beliefs in the region. He regularly publicises Russian anti-war statements through his translations of posts on the web.
Dr Griffiths is the author of Towards a Science of Belief Systems (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014) and of the forthcoming Aleksandr Prokhanov and Post-Soviet Esotericism (ibidem-Verlag).
Ben Chacko is Editor of the Morning Star.
The meeting is free, although donations are welcome - all proceeds will go to the Morning Star Fighting Fund.
