The Implications of the Rochford Review: Asessment for 21st Century Children with SEND
This important conference regional conference follows the publication of the Rochford Review. It provides expert, practical insight into the proposed new Statutory assessment arrangements for pupils working below the standard of national curriculum tests. It is designed to ease anxieties about proposed changes, and help colleagues develop a thorough understanding of the underpinning issues as well as a confident, practical approach to the new arrangements. There will be a particular focus on the Engagement for Learning Framework, and how this can illuminate children’s learning, achievements and progress.
Richard Aird OBE a member of the Rochford Review, will discuss provision for those pupils with SEND who were the focus of the Review, including recommendations for schools to combine distinctive pedagogy with formative and summative assessment approaches to ensure that provision is sufficiently robust to meet new statutory requirements and the ambitions of recent SEND legislation. Professor Barry Carpenter CBE will then share extensive international research which he and others have undertaken in the area of pupil engagement and explain the fundamental importance which the Engagement for Learning Framework can play in raising standards of teaching and learning for all learners with SEND. In particular, the needs of the new generation of children with Complex Needs – pervasive across all schools, including mainstream – will be considered.
Research consultant, Jo Egerton, and complex learning needs co-ordinator, Bev Cockbill, are published authors, and highly experienced in the development and use of the Engagement Profile and Scale. Working in partnership, they will present an in-depth, practical exploration of the Engagement for Learning Framework, using case studies and video to enable participants to familiarise themselves with its everyday use. The day will close with an opportunity for delegates to consider the Principles outlined by the Rochford Review, raise questions and ensure they depart feeling inspired and confident about improving outcomes for the country’s most complex and vulnerable learners.
