The In-Between State by Voon Wong of Viewport Studio
Tuesday 7 June, 18.45 – 21.00
Voon Wong arrived from Singapore fresh from his military service, into the creative hot house that was the Architectural Association in London’s Bedford Square in the mid 1980s. He went on to work for Rick Mather – at that time designing the groundbreaking Zen restaurants in London in glass and steel – and the late Zaha Hadid, with whom he worked on the Vitra Fire Station, Hadid’s first realised project. He set up his own architecture studio in 1997 and has subsequently made a career from designing everything from private houses to aircraft interiors for Virgin Atlantic, lighting, furniture and lately even brand activations for major organisations. Coming from the rigorously disciplined city state of Singapore going through rapid change and arriving in the world’s most creative city, has led to this hybrid award-winning creative studio working between London and Singapore. Voon Wong will be presenting with Viewport Studio’s Ian Macready. One of the themes they will be discussing amongst other topics is the parallel between the hybrid situation that is Singapore and the hybrid disciplines that Viewport Studio practice in.
