The Informed Trustee course has been developed by STEP, and the course is endorsed by Napier University. STEP is a Not-for-Profit professional body whose mission includes promoting education and high standards. In particular STEP has identified that there is a growing body of law and regulation which trustees need to be aware of in terms of their responsibilities. This crosses the fields of law, investments and accountancy and so STEP have developed this course supporting public good in the field of trusteeship

The course aims to accelerate the learning of new Trustees or to refresh the knowledge of experienced Trustees, providing support for a changing landscape.

Youth Scotland is running a pilot project for 16 Trustees of Voluntary Youth Work Charities - either national or local.

The course is online and accessible through multi-media enabling study at the individual’s own pace. Progression through the course is structured and includes formative self-assessment material. The course will focus on real-life scenarios and the practical application of knowledge.

The course materials are written by subject matters experts in each of their respective fields, including 6 writers from Scotland. Authors come from reputable firms being predominantly from law firms. Specialist accounting firms are also involved. SCVO has also been engaged to ensure relevance for Scotland, and OSCR has provided informal feedback during the development of the course.

There are 11 modules:

1. Introduction

2. The form of a charity - governance

3. Roles and responsibilities

4. Membership matters

5. Communications and data

6. Operations

7. Fundraising

8. Accounts

9. Financial management and tax

10. Risk management and sustainability

11. Trustee development pathway
