Event description

Description

The Inner Reaches of Outer Space is a summer Holiday Art Club for children aged 6-9 interested in connecting science and art through movement, writing and drawing.

Science relies on our creativity, and in turn creativity relies on our exploration of the world around us. In this Holiday Art Club led by writer and former NASA Storyteller Jessica Fox, we will explore infinity, space and the cosmos and process our feelings about it through dance, creative writing and visual art.

We will get an insiders look at NASA, the cosmos and learn about three kinds of infinity. In the great tradition of scientists like Einstein, Feynman and Somerville who relied on their imagination and artists who drew inspiration from science, we will boldly go where not-many have gone before... and stretch our imaginations to create worlds where science and art collide.

During a course of five morning sessions 09:30-12:00, the cosmological concepts to be explored are the three kinds of infinity: a ray, a circle and a line segment. We will learn how they shape our universe and inform science. We will also look at where they appear in stories, art and dance. Then we will create our own pieces to explore our feelings about infinity. Toward the end of the week, participants can choose one form of expression: dance, drawing or writing to work on and will leave the week with works in progress to take home and continue.

Jessica Fox is an author, screenwriter and director. Her love of stories and images began at the age of 5 when reality betrayed her and she realised dressing in a Superman costume did not in fact grant you super powers. Thus a life of creating stories, world building and play was born. Fox attended the National Film School in Prague and graduated from Franklin & Marshall College with a BA in Folklore/Mythology and Astronomy. Founding Mythic Image Studios and Picto Productions, Fox has directed award-winning shorts, music videos, commercials, documentaries and theatre, including 'Shakespeare: The Puppet Show' at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Inspired by the connection between stories and scientific exploration, Fox was a storyteller for NASA and has published 'Three Things You Need to Know About Rockets', a Waterstone’s Book of the Month. Recently, Fox attended the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Emerging Talent Program, wrote 'Never After', a fairy tale series featuring Gillian Anderson and is developing her next book The Theerys. Fox continues to feed her inner nerd by story consulting for science and tech organisations.
