A dynamic talk for mental health professionals on integrating modalities for complex trauma.
In complex cases, no single modality is enough. The “Integrated Therapist” model draws on psychiatry, occupational therapy, family systems theory, EMDR, and DBT within a clear ethical framework. This approach allows clinicians to move fluidly between modalities, while staying grounded in formulation and treatment goals that are realistic, collaborative, and safe.
Key themes we’ll explore:
• Psychiatry as the anchoring, steadying function, guiding MDT thinking.
• Occupational Therapy providing structure, motivation assessment, and problem-solving, with DBT where needed.
• Family Systems Theory tackling communication patterns that minimise, escalate, or amplify trauma within families.
• EMDR & Internal Family Systems for accessing and processing the internal mechanisms of trauma.
• Ethical integration — how to apply modalities intentionally, avoiding naive “mix and match,” and preventing over-reliance on diagnosis and medication.
Case study: We’ll illustrate this model through “patient x,” a woman whose journey includes trauma, abandonment, and eating disorder challenges.
