Event description

Description

The Heathwall is probably the most overlooked and least understood of all the "lost" rivers of South London. In pre-history it was a tidal channel of the Thames that separated the isalnd of Battersea from the South London mainland; in early modern history it functioned as a drainage waterway; it disappeared underground as part of Bazalgette's Main Drainage works in the 1860s; today it still flows below ground as a storm relief sewer. This 2.5 hour, 3 mile guided walk follows its course from its junction with the Falcon Brook to its original mouth into the Thames at Nine Elms.

Jon Newman has just published the first history of this waterway, Heathwall, Batteresea's forgotten river. A complementary copy of the book is included in the ticket price.
