Event description

Description

The Jericho Films: Twin portraits of a unique area of Oxford, 1974 and 2019. (Subtitled screening).

These two film portraits of a unique Oxford neighbourhood will be screened back to back, showing how the people, places and concerns of this much-loved area have changed over 45 years.

Open Door Jericho 1974, made by Maggie Black and Lucy Willis, was produced for the BBC2 Community Access programme ‘Open Door’ soon after Jericho had narrowly escaped total destruction and was undergoing rapid change. Could its character survive? Colour print, newly obtained from BBC archives. Run time 30 minutes.

Our Jericho 2019 is inspired by the earlier film and was made by one of the original film-makers, Maggie Black, with director/editor Nicola Josse of Film Oxford. Like the earlier film, Our Jericho stars local residents, boaters, cats and characters, its magnificent church, school, community institutions, pubs, artists and musicians, and portrays Jericho still struggling to maintain its character today. Run time 27 minutes.

Thanks to all the generous donors who made Our Jericho possible, especially the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Oxford City Council, The Lucy Group, Oxford University Press, The Doris Field Trust, and local University Colleges and businesses.

FAQs

What are my transport/parking/access options for the event?

Common Ground Café and Shared Workspace is a social enterprise pop-up in the Oxford University owned building, located 2/3rds of the way down Little Clarendon Street on the left (from St. Giles), opposite Gails and Jericho Cheese Co., behind two trees and under the 1970's brutalist, graduate accommodation block, which was formerly Barclays Bank! Common Ground is wheelchair accessible, although the nearest wheelchair toilet is the wine bar just along the street. There is parking outside for 30 minutes or pay meter parking just behind us in Wellington Square.
