The Keys to Successful Adaptation with Paul Bassett Davies

By Prospect/Bectu training
Online event

Overview

1 x 2.5hr workshop – interactive/exercises. Skill Level: Intermediate/ Advanced

Content: Adaptations are more popular than ever. Many of the biggest screen, stage and musical successes of recent years have been based on material that began life in a different medium – whether as a novel, a comic book, or even a box of Lego bricks. Learn how to transform material of every kind from any medium to another, creating an original new work that’s also faithful to its source. Whether you adapt your own work or someone else's, you need to know what makes a successful adaptation.

  • Learn what each medium does best – and why.
  • Exploit the strengths of the medium you’re working with.
  • Investigate and understand the true heart of the story.
  • Discover how far you can go in changing the source material.
  • Avoid the most common errors of bad adaptations.

The best adaptations aren't rewrites - they're reinventions.

About the tutor:

Paul Bassett Davies has a wealth of experience as a writer, producer and director for film, television, radio and stage. He’s worked with some of the biggest names in British comedy and co-wrote three series of a radio sitcom with Jeremy Hardy, and another that he created himself. His radio plays have starred Bill Nighy, Alison Steadman, David Hemmings and Martin Clunes. In addition to being a broadcaster and podcaster, Paul is the author of four published novels and a collection of stories, one of which was selected by Stephen King for an anthology of scary stories. He writes all the time.
