Event description

Description

In early 2016 I happened upon a most amazing sculpture in creation and was instantly awed by its tragic beauty.

The Knifeangel sculpture, by artist Alfie bradley sculptor, inspired my four part composition of The KnifeAngel Project for jazz sextet, which we recorded in August the same year.

The Knifeangel stands at 26 ft high, weighs over 10 tonnes and is constructed with over 100,000 reclaimed knives, collected in amnesty bins, then each one cleaned and blunted by Alfie himself. On the wings, some blades have been inscribed with messages to lost ones by relatives, making the sculpture a memorial- the effect is powerful and the message one of despair, peace, love and hope.

My aim with KnifeAngel music is to help spread the word of the campaign and is dedicated to all those who have lost loved ones in street crime.

Clive Knowles of The British Ironworks Centre near Oswestry, initiated the Save A Life, Surrender Your Knife campaign, in conjunction with UK constabularies, and aims for the Knifeangel to be set on the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square as a national monument bringing awareness to knife crime in Britain.
