About this event

Please join us online for an exciting talk about the 'Parenting Young Adults' and how we can use the characters for 2022 KU Big Read book The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper as a means of looking intently at parent-child relationships.

The main character has to move house in his late teens in order to fit in with his father’s job. He really doesn’t want to go, but has no choice. Once at the space station however, he quickly makes some new friends, and they both observe and reflect on the relationships they see. We will talk about how we view our relationships with parents as we get older, and how all parties need to adapt to keep effective communication going.

The event will feature Dr Alison Baverstock, Professor of Publishing at Kingston and founder of the KU Big Read, Mata Ayoub, Director of Learning and Teaching in Creative and Cultural Industries as well as Chair of the BAME Staff Network and BME Alumni Advisory Group and Dr Jo Suchy, KU alumnus and Senior Educational Psychologist at Cognus Limited.

About the Author

Phil Stamper grew up in a rural village near Dayton, Ohio. He has a B.A. in Music from the University of Dayton and an M.A. in Publishing with Creative Writing from Kingston University.

When he first left his home state, he moved to Washington, DC. Soon after, he began his career in non-profit PR. In addition to the press releases and news stories, he began writing novels on the side.

Years later, Phil is now the bestselling author of The Gravity of Us, As Far As You’ll Take Me, and other books. Although his work is generally marketed as ‘young adult’, his books have a far wider audience. He works in author development for a major book publisher in New York City, where he lives with his husband and their dog. Golden Boys, the first book in his upcoming young adult rom-com duology, came out in February 2022. Small Town Pride, his debut middle grade novel, will be published in Summer 2022.
