Description
An Inside/Outside arts symposium bringing together artists, students, academics and aspiring changemakers.
Attend our launch event to explore the potential of dissent.
You will begin to explore dissent as an active and dynamic response to the situations we find ourselves in, individually and collectively. The Symposium will kick-start the laboratory process which will run for 5 weeks, performed by CAS Associate Artists. We also have a website dedicated to the project.
We currently live in an increasingly polarised society where for many reasons you can find yourself either ‘inside’ or ‘outside’. Divisions exist politically environmentally, ideologically, economically and socially. At the same time our understanding of our own identity is changing, lines are blurring between an on and offline world, social media adds a further dimension of inclusion or exclusion.
Through conversation and creative participation we can learn more about ourselves, and working collaboratively.
What you can look forward to:
The Laboratory of Dissent is a place to test ideas and experiment with what it means to share space with multiple viewpoints and persons. A full programme will be announced in due course, you can expect:
- Interactive discussions and explorations with guest speakers and CAS artists
- Diverse presentations and perspectives
- Short-films on the Inside/Outside theme
- Surprises, inspirations, and stimulating ideas
- Find out how Dissent has transformed CAS' collaborative practices and share in our experiences

Dissent: A Creative Practice
CAS' first publication in the Chapter 1. Dissent series provides 3 essays by artists Susan Francis, Yonat Nitzan-Green PHD and Maija Liepins.
An exploration of theory and practice, these three very different essays consider how Dissent might be understood as a constructive and creative methodology that encourages a dialogue and generates new solutions and relationships. Susan considers 'the relational self' and how it might create an interstice for a constructive dissent. Maija focuses on 'individual dissent for collective change' exploring how dissent is part of a non-linear process of mutual creativity. Yonat asks whether the performative act (including mis-performance) can be understood as a link between a painting and that "outside it".
