Description

The Palace International Film Festival presents The Last of England experienced with a live score at The Castle Cinema

Tilda Swinton stars in cult queer film director Derek Jarman’s personal commentary on the decline of his country in a language closer to poetry than prose. The Last of England is an angrily poetic, personal portrayal of a country that he saw was in ruins. Through the experimental form, through the post-apocalyptic depiction of the country, Derek’s film dismantles the establishment and highlights the horrors of Thatchers Britain through a dream-like state. This film is reawakened in response to Brexit Britain in 2019.

The film portrays a disillusionment of place by fostering ideas around nostalgia and memory in lands of bricks and destruction. Our displacement of nostalgia and wistful folk song soundscapes that draw from a history of connection to land and nationalism otherwise seem comforting but are juxtapositioned with apocalyptic scenes of disenfranchised British emigrants.

Experience this unique screening with a new improvised live score from artists Joe Summers, Rosa Irwin-Clark and Thomas Summers. The trio join the dots between distant moments in British history & use aspects of the countries collective musical heritage to explore ideas of nostalgia, pride, and their toxic possibilities.
