Event description

Description

Are you involved in the dispute with an SME over a product you purchased? Are you an SME selling to consumers? Then this event is for you!

This event will explore a timely topic and its relevance for the West Midlands region: consumer protection and SMEs. Recent consumer events such as the global mis-selling of cars by Volkswagen and the recent case brought against Mastercard for transaction fees affecting 46 million UK consumers have brought to the fore the importance of consumer redress and dispute resolution in matters concerning everyday life. Drawing on impactful research in collective redress and dispute resolution carried out by Rhonson Salim (Lecturer in Law, Aston University & the event convener), the event seeks to increase awareness of the law in these areas amongst the general public and SMEs.

As such, it focuses on two perspectives:

1) Avenues available to everyday consumers to enforce their rights, and

2) Essential factors SMEs should take into account in the resolution of consumer disputes.

In this latter context, the uncertainty of Brexit adds to the challenge for SMEs. Accordingly, the event will additionally address some of the dispute resolution challenges for SMEs as they engage in business with EU consumers in the post-Brexit landscape.

The event will take the form of panel discussions featuring contributions from the event convener, other leading academics in the field, non-academic experts and SMEs.

Discussion panels will be followed by a plenary session with Q&A, giving the audience an opportunity to hear from the experts and to engage in detailed discussions afterwards. This event will be relevant to small and medium businesses, members of the public, as well as organisations supporting both consumers and SMEs. It will provide a timely opportunity for consumers and SMEs to deepen their knowledge and understanding of consumer redress as well as contribute their own perspectives on the issue.
