About this event

Drawing upon his extensive experience as a prosecutor, Paul Harvey will speak about the law and procedure relating to sexual offences. Paul will cover issues in respect of the prosecution of such cases in the criminal courts and include the complex issues of admissibility of evidence.

This talk will appeal to court lawyers who instruct counsel or appear in the criminal courts who wish to learn about court practice and this important area of the law.

Paul Harvey has served as an advocate depute since 2021. He called to the bar of England and Wales in 2013 and transferred to the Scottish bar in 2017. Paul was recently appointed Assistant Principal Crown Counsel and strategic lead for the prosecution of sexual and domestic abuse offences.

Paul has extensive experience working at the European Court of Human Rights, specialising in cases involving criminal procedure and evidence, counter-terrorism and extradition. His work has focussed on the right to a fair trial and the rights of victims in the criminal justice system, particularly in the context of sexual offences and offences against children.

He is one of the editors of Mason’s Forensic Medicine and the Law and the co-author with Lord Turnbull of the recently published The Law of Sexual Offences in Scotland.

The book is a comprehensive guide to the law and practice of sexual offences in Scotland. It is an indispensable guide for those involved in sexual offences cases at all levels of the Scottish legal system.

The talk will last about an hour with the opportunity for questions and a glass of wine afterwards. The event which is free, is eligible for at least one hour CPD.
