The JONK Learning to Learn to be Back at School Week

A Course led by Marcelo Staricoff (PhD, NPQH, FCCT) in three 90 minute Sessions based on the original idea of the JONK Learning to Learn Week, which schools use to launch the academic year. This initiative has now been adapted to enable schools to welcome the children and staff back into a wellbeing-focused and academically inspirational post-pandemic school.

1st Session is on Monday, July 13th, 4PM

2nd Session is on Wednesday, July 15th, 4PM

3rd Session is on Friday, July 17th, 4PM

The sessions will focus on:

Session 1: The world before, during and after the Pandemic: (Monday, July 13th, 4PM)

This session explores these three 'worlds' using a variety of creative, critical and philosophical thinking strategies that build a supportive post-pandemic learning to learn culture in the classroom that will enable every individual to return to school with a positive mindset and to then thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

Session 2: The learner and the school as a community for learning before, during and after the Pandemic: (Wednesday, July 15th, 4PM)

This session focuses on how the experience of the pandemic has brought to the fore the importance of equipping students with the qualities and dispositions of successful lifelong learners, innovative thinkers and intrinsically motivated individuals, especially in times of uncertainty. The session offers a number of strategies and models designed to enable the learner to succeed at each of the six stages of thinking and learning outlined by the JONK approach.

Session 3: The Five Domains of the JONK Learning to Learn Week from a Post-Pandemic perspective: (Friday, July 17th, 4PM)

This session focuses on the wealth of easy to implement initiatives that form of the traditional Learning to Learn Week and introduces a post pandemic perspective to each of the initiatives shared:

• a) Personal models of learning and a values led whole school culture for learning
• b) Developing creative and critical thinking skills
• c) Strategies for visible thinking and learning
• d) Philosophy and a philosophical approach to the curriculum
• e) The lifelong learning dispositions as part of the everyday curriculum

Each Session is also supported with a range of articles that illustrate how the theory translates into practice and that serve to also preview the focus of the next Session. The Sessions will also illustrate numerous models, strategies and ideas that form the basis of Marcelo Staricoff’s forthcoming book entitled ‘The Joy of Not Knowing’ due for publication by Routledge in the Autumn of 2020.
