Event description

Description

Leeds is having something of a renaissance in the development of not only the traditional city centre but also in the forming of more ‘desirable’ areas beyond. In many parts of the Leeds City Region something new is coming whilst many of our existing cultural icons also get a new face ...

Many will know and some even may love, the now infamous ‘Leeds look’ of the 1980/90’s. This ‘look’ didn’t come out of isolation of course – it was in some way a response to the former Modernist desire to make Leeds the ‘Motorway City of The Seventies’, which in turn was a diversion from another phase of Leeds’ more industrial architectural past. But what of Leeds Future?

Our question is how are we as communities, developers, architects, retailers (and all those in the creative industries that thrive in the ‘Northern powerhouse’) reacting to our architectural past in defining and designing the emerging face of the city? Should we be learning from the ‘Leeds Look’ or ripping it up and starting again? And how should these changes be steered- who gets to decide upon, to borrow a term, the ‘new Leeds vernacular’?

We invite all interested parties to join us for a series of short presentations by our varied and knowledgeable panel followed by two lively panel discussions, chaired by David Ellis of Leeds Civic Trust and IdeaSmiths podcast, debating the aesthetic future of Leeds and its impact on how the city is portrayed and more importantly how it is used by its citizens and those who visit it.

Butler's will be open for drinks and refreshments throughout and after the event.
