This online panel is the first in a series of alumni events for MSc Real Estate Economics and Finance students in Asia.

Drawing from their current research, distinguished LSE scholars will discuss the likely effects COVID-19 might have on real estate markets in big cities. The event offers a unique opportunity to learn about the evidence-based and theory-guided perspectives from researchers who are at the frontier of research. The panel consists of leading academics who have contributed to the LSE programmes in Real Estate Economics and Finance (REEF).

Prof. Paul Cheshire is the founding director of the MSc REEF programme. He has recently published a paper on tall buildings and the role of Trophy Architects in gaining permission for them in London and a CEP report on the impacts of COVID-19 on the housing market.

Prof. Henry Overman is a former director of the MSc REEF programme and the current director of the What Works Centre for Local Economic Growth. He has evaluated scenarios under which the coronavirus could cause a “big city exodus”.

Dr. Lindsay Relihan is a course convenor on the MSc REEF programme. She is studying the impact of COVID-19 on US retail markets, particularly the growth of online retail and the persistence of changes in consumer shopping habits.

The panel discussion will be moderated by Prof. Gabriel Ahlfeldt, current director of the MSc REEF programme and designer of the REEF online certificate short course. He has evaluated the potential effects of a reduction in professional and social interactions in physical space within a dynamic spatial model.

Dr. Lois Liao, deputy director of the MSc REEF programme and head tutor of the REEF online certificate short course will chair the event.
