About this event

Join renowned Brummie historian Professor Carl Chinn MBE for a free public talk honouring the legacy of Spring Hill Library — a stunning Grade II* listed Victorian building in Ladywood, Birmingham.

This treasured community hub served local residents for nearly 130 years, and its history is as weird as it is wonderful. From surviving a bus crash, two World Wars, demolition attempts and a global pandemic, Spring Hill Library has stood proud as a symbol of resilience and public spirit.

Despite Birmingham City Council's recent decision to permanently close the library, there is hope on the horizon: the Council has committed to maintaining ownership and aims to lease the building to an organisation dedicated to keeping it open for community use.

Carl’s talk will explore not only the unique architecture and history of this beautiful red brick and terracotta building, but also the wider story of Birmingham’s public library service. After the talk, there’ll be a Q&A session, followed by live storytelling from writers involved in the Haunted Birmingham and Library Zine projects.

Come along to celebrate the historical importance and enduring impact of one of Birmingham’s most remarkable buildings.

Attendees should meet at the customer service desk at Tesco’s ten minutes prior to the start of the session. Once assembled, the group will be brought to the community room, which is through the warehouse.
