About this event

In today's rapidly changing landscape, businesses are increasingly recognising the importance of sustainability for the planet and their profitability, however, how does environmental and sustainability legislation impact on this?

This masterclass will provide a comprehensive exploration of the link between sustainability and legislation, the underlying legislation as it relates to the environment and sustainability and the practicalities of legislation as it affects businesses and their activities.

This masterclass will be delivered by a Coventry University expert with over 10 years’ experience in commercial and technical related environmental research; and supported by the West Midlands Decarbonisation Net Zero Programme, who will outline grants and the support available to West Midlands SMEs to assist them in making their businesses more sustainable.

This masterclass is one of a series of 4 masterclasses on understanding the needs, benefits and actions required to make a successful business in a clean and sustainable future.

In the rest of this masterclass series, we will explore:

  • The Road to Sustainability for SMEs: From Understanding to Action (available on request)
  • Financial business case for introducing sustainable business practices (24th April 2024)

Our academic expert Dr. Najib Altawell will be delivering the session.

Dr. Najib Altawell is a researcher, consultant, and tutor at CU London (Coventry University Group) in environmental engineering, specialised in Biomass energy (commercial and technical aspects).

He earned his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from the University of Nottingham, MRes in Nanotechnology and Nano-electronics from Surrey University, BSc (Hon) in Computer Science from Westminster University and PGC in higher education from Plymouth University, plus PGD in secondary teaching from Kingston College via Greenwich University.

Dr Altawell research and published work related to global warming and climate change, sustainability, sustainable energy, and issues connected to fossil fuels/climate change & global warming. In his latest research, concerning the environment, Dr Altawell designed a new type of machine olfaction device that detect various types of bacteria and viruses which can infect humans and animals. Also, the device can provide an instant measurement/reading of toxic pollutions in soil, water, and air. Other research includes energy crops, in relation to technical, scientific, and business aspects for power generating companies, as well as for transportation and heating/cooling systems. The energy crops are processed to produce fuels via the application of a new methodology. The new methodology selects the most suitable biomass materials and combining them together, as part of several stages, which lead to the production of a new type of biofuels.
