BA Acting presents The Libertine

by Stephen Jeffreys

‘I am up for it. All the time. That’s not a boast. Or an opinion. It is bone-hard medical fact.’

Our introduction to the life and ways of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester. Charismatic poet, playwright, notorious rake, f
riend and confidant of Charles II with a legendary appetite for excess. Yet when a chance encounter with an actress at the Playhouse sends him reeling, he is forced to reconsider everything he thinks and feels. His relationship with friends, wife and King are thrown apart as his outlandish behaviour grows, fuelled by his obsession with the extraordinary Elizabeth Barry.

With all the wit, flair and bawdiness of a Restoration comedy, Stephen Jeffreys’ brilliant play is a comical historical romp with real bite incisive critique of life in an age of excess.

Both The Libertine & Playhouse Creatures are presented by New CLan Arts in Repertoire, providing a chance to look at specific events in history from different social, political and gender perspectives.

This production contains material of an adult nature, 14+ only

This student production is presented by special arrangement with Nick Hern Books.
