Composing during the latter part of the eighteenth century, a similar period to the French artists and craftsmen featured in our Gilded Interiors exhibition, Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (often referred to as the ‘black Mozart’) was a man with a dark skin who broke through the social conventions of the time to become a favourite of Marie Antoinette.
