The Life Size City is a set of documentaries exploring what it is about big places that help them fit us and our lives. Made by Danish urbanist Mikael Colville-Andersen, each programme focuses on one city and what has shaped it. They explore the processes and challenges and linger on the initiatives which make the place liveable – often those initiated or driven by local people and communities.

We screened the first series during the My York Central public engagement and YoCo ran a series of online Screenings and Discussions using the second series during the pandemic. That series of events brought participants from all over the world and was successful in creating discussion about what “good” means in city-making. With York Central starting to take shape, and YoCo pushing to be part of the development, this conversation needs to continue and engage with everyone who cares about York - or wherever their home city is.

Join us on Zoom where we’ll stream the film, share your thoughts in the Chat on the way through and then help unpick what we should take away from the experience of Barcelona – a city with history and tourism – but also a pioneering approach to people-centred placemaking.

Frequently asked questions

Will the event be recorded and available afterwards?

No, but we'll blog it to highlight key issues raised in the discussion - it'll be on YoCo's website at https://www.yoco.uk/blog

Is this a one-off event or part of a series

This event is part of York Environment Festival - for more information go to https://yorkenvironmentfestival.org.uk/ We will be running further Life-Sized City Screenings and Discussions as monthly online events through the winter - check https://www.yoco.uk/events or join YoCo for updates!

Is this event aimed just at people living or working in York?

No - the issues which will be raised by the film and discussed by participants are common to many cities, so join us wherever your interest lies. YoCo is focused on the York Central development, but we'll be using this as a case study for potential good practice which is will be relevant elsewhere.
